Service is being restored on Metra lines that use Ogilvie Transportation Center after trains were stopped and the building was evacuated while a police bomb squad investigated suspicious packages.

Delays are expected related to Chicago and Metra police activity and some trains will be canceled, become express runs or operate out of sequence, Metra officials warned.

No Metra trains were allowed in or out of the downtown station as of midmorning Wednesday after police were called in following a report of two packages left near the train tracks by an individual who was behaving suspiciously. Metra reported at 12:19 p.m. that trains were running again.

It appeared the packages were harmless; police are trying to find the person who abandoned them, Metra spokeswoman Meg Thomas-Reile said.

It’s not known yet if the morning’s closures will impact the afternoon rush.

The basement, street level, train boarding area, and first two floors of Ogilvie at 500 W. Madison St. were evacuated. Sections of Madison Street and the Metra Market were blocked off to the public as well.
