AmazonBasics is not only very lucrative for Amazon, it’s become a trusted brand shoppers turn to when they want a reliable accessory. However, that brand has been tarnished a little today on news that some AmazonBasics power banks are a fire hazard, and Amazon sold these faulty accessories for nearly three years.
As the US Consumer Product Safety Commission explains, six versions of AmazonBasics’ portable lithium-ion battery chargers/power banks can overheat and ignite, meaning the potential for both fire and burns. In total, some 260,000 hazardous units were sold and as of today are being recalled.
The power banks in question include the 16,100 mAh, 10,000 mAh, 5,600 mAh, 2,000 mAh with micro USB cable, 3,000 mAh, and 3,000 mAh with USB micro cable. They are rubberized or metallic black and measure roughly 3-by-1.4-by-0.9 inches and carry the product ID numbers B00LRK8EVO, B00LRK8HJ8, B00LRK8I7O, B00LRK8IV0, B00LRK8JDC, or B00ZQ4JQAA. You can find those numbers printed on the back of the product.
Amazon offered the power banks for sale through Amazon.com, Amazon Bookstores, and Amazon Pop-Up Stores between Dec. 2014 and July 2017. They were manufactured by Guoguang Electric Company Limited, of China. So far, 53 reports of overheating have been logged, including one incident of chemical burns due to contact with battery acid, and four reports of property damage through smoke and/or fire.
If you own one of these faulty power banks, expect Amazon to get in contact with you if you purchased the product from them yourself. If you didn’t, then contact Amazon directly toll-free at 855-215-5134 from 8am to 5pm ET Monday through Saturday. Alternatively, visit https://amazonpowerbank.expertinquiry.com/ at any time.
In all cases, Amazon will ship the power banks back and issue a full refund to you. In the meantime, do not use the power bank and unplug it from any power source.
